Why It Matters (Test Engineering pt. 2)

Last week I wrote an article about the difference between Test Engineering and Quality Assurance. Why does that distinction even matter beyond the title that is assigned to a department at a company? There are three reasons that this is a surprisingly destructive mindset: Cannot fix the quality problem if looking in the wrong places. Cannot test quality into software. Employee morale. In every organization I have worked and in many conversations with people inside and outside of the software industry, I have met a misunderstanding of Test Engineering versus Quality Assurance. I am a professional Test Engineer. My job is look for bugs and validate that the product functions as the business wants it to function. Welcome to the Internet We are essentially all connected to the internet 24 hours a day, between our smart phone, watch, computer, television, Alexa or Google Home. Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram allow us to share even the most mundane details about ourselves as though they are something special.

Zhima Credit: China’s Social Credit System Numbers are very convenient for a lot of things. We can use them to define a quantity; they are useful for expressing size in a meaningful way; they are unique and so can be used as identifiers; and they are perfect for ranking. In sports and games, a score is used as an easy means to determine who is better. In the financial world, a credit score is used as an easy measure of who is better, as well as a decent way to track whether one’s financial decision making has improved in the eyes of those who lend money.
